So many people are on gluten free diets these day, I decided to carry out an experiment by going gluten free for a week, to find out myself how easy it was and to check out alternatives out there.
I tried out a gluten free bread called 'Genius', and genius it is - makes gluten free sandwiches super easy, you can buy this in most supermarkets (I got mine in Sainsburys).
Waitrose have an extensive gluten free section, I discovered that their gluten free fruit cake slices go well with a cup of tea!
Breakfast can be the most tricky part, Waitrose sell gluten free porridge oats but you can also get porridge made from quinoa porridge flakes which I tried with dried cranberries and could definitely get used to. Of course there is always the trusty yogurt and fruit option. At the weekend I made polenta cakes to go with egg and bacon which was far more delicious than the usual bacon and egg sandwich (rather more time consuming though).
There are so many 'gluten free' products out their - Warburtons have just released a gluten free bread and Carluccio's have a whole gluten free menu. Although products such as gluten free bread are useful when on the run, they do tend to be quite processed and there are loads of naturally gluten free foods out there such as pulses, rice, vegetables, potatoes so these should always be chosen where possible.
The most difficult part of the gluten free week was when my boss brought in a deliciously moist carrot cake and I must admit that I did give in to this, so I can see where life may get a little more tricky for the gluten free-er!
